Lower 48 Energy Upper Greenfields 2 BESS will be a different project in its own merit however it will share the same location and same National Grid Substation as L48 Upper Greenfields 1 BESS.

Lower 48 Energy Upper Greenfields 2 BESS will be a different project in its own merit however it will share the same location and same National Grid Substation as L48 Upper Greenfields 1 BESS.

Lower 48 Energy Upper Greenfields 2 BESS is a 175 MW BESS connection located immediately adjacent to proposed New Deer 2  400 kV Substation. Although it would be located in the field adjacent to L48 Upper Greenfields 1 BESS, Lower 48 Energy Upper Greenfields 2 would be connected to the 132 kV network and not to the 400 kV network.

In discussions with National Grid and our review of the Holistic Network Design (HND) Study, it was understood that 2 x 240 MVA transformers would be available at 132 kV as part of a double circuit network at New Deer 2 Substation that would connect New Deer 2 to St Fergus Switching Station. L48 applied for a 175 MW capacity at one of the transformers to take advantage of the proposed 132 kV circuit connecting St Fergus Switching Station.

Together with Upper Greenfields 1, we have started the Pre Planning Studies for Upper Greenfields 2. We have completed the Noise Assessment and Landscape Study and we are going through constraint mapping and Flood Study.

Lower 48 Energy aims to energise the project in 2032/33 soon after New Deer 2 Substation is ready and Lower 48 Energy Upper Greenfields 1 BESS project is energised.

The 175 MW, 350 MWh BESS project would complement the generation connected at St Fergus Switching Station and would be connected at New Deer 2 with a very short cable route.

The project would be AC coupled and would be structured to participate in all the relevant BESS markets, taking advantage of its strategic location being close to the offshore wind generation and St Fergus Terminal.
